A West Liberty man has been arrested after allegedly providing false information in order to acquire a weapon.
According to court records, 22-year-old Mauricio Reed of East 3rd Street went to Fin and Feather on July 20th with the intention to purchase a Glock 9mm pistol. He reportedly completed the firearm transaction form and stated that he was not subject to a protection order, despite having had one issued to him a month prior due to an alleged domestic assault in Muscatine County.
The front of the protection order specifically states that Reed is prohibited from possessing or receiving firearms and ammunition.
A subsequent interview with Reed and law enforcement led to Reed admitting that he has a no-contact order against him and that he signed the transaction form with the false information.
A warrant was issued September 3rd; Reed was taken into custody shortly afterwards. On Friday, he posted bond and a public defender was appointed. Arraignment will occur at a later date.
If convicted on the charge of providing false information in acquiring a weapon, Reed could be sentenced to up to five years in prison.
