Student Health and Wellness will host the Field of Memories event Friday to honor those who have died or struggle with suicide.
The event will take place on the Parks Library lawn from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
September is National Suicide Prevention Month, a dedicated time to raise awareness about suicide, reduce stigma surrounding mental health and connect people with life-saving resources.
All attendees can personalize a small flag with a message of hope to individuals struggling with suicidal thoughts or to honor someone who has committed suicide and plant the flag in the Parks Library lawn.
Field of Memories aims to bring the community together to inspire conversation and change.
“The Field of Memories is an experience,” Michelle Roling, Student Counseling Services assistant and outreach director, said. “An opportunity to reflect, recognize and honor the significant impact suicide has in all our lives. Honor a life, offer hope and make a difference.”
The drop-by event hopes to break down barriers for those who hesitate to seek help.
“This event creates discussion, engagement and opportunity to access resources: stop by for a variety of crisis information, fidgets, for talking with campus resources and offer hope,” Roling said. “Learn about opportunities such as workshops on campus.”
