AMES — Residential development, changes to the city’s urban renewal areas and a proposed downtown social district will headline the Ames City Council’s meeting Tuesday.
The council will meet at 6 p.m. at Ames City Hall, with multiple decisions that could affect future development across the city. The agenda includes two rezoning hearings, a potential Ames Plan 2040 land-use amendment and proposed changes to urban renewal areas.
Council members will consider a request to initiate an Ames Plan 2040 land-use amendment for rural residential development at 3600 190th St.
Two other residential developments will come before the council for rezoning hearings.
Hayden’s Preserve, located at 5571 Hyde Ave., is proposed to be partially rezoned to Floating Suburban Residential Low Density with an amended master plan. The council is scheduled to hold a first reading of the ordinance and provide direction on amendments to the development agreement.
The Greenbriar development at 4600 George Washington Carver Ave. is also proposed to be rezoned to Floating Suburban Residential Low Density with a master plan. A first reading of the ordinance is scheduled Tuesday.
Council members will also consider directing city staff to move forward with amendments and new designations for urban renewal areas.
Another item could change how residents experience downtown events. The council will consider directing staff to prepare an ordinance establishing a “Sip and Stroll” social district for events hosted by Ames Main Street.
The council will also decide whether to continue bow hunting within the city park system through the Urban Deer Management Program.
On the consent agenda, the city could approve several street and parking closures for the Ames High School homecoming parade Sept. 21. The proposed closures include portions of Pearle, Burnett, Kellogg and Clark avenues, along with Main and Fifth streets.
Iowa State homecoming preparations are also on the agenda. The council will consider street closures for ExCYtement in the Streets on Oct. 2 and a fireworks permit for Central Campus Mass Campaniling.
The meeting begins at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the City Council Chambers at City Hall.
