A Tiffin man faces charges after allegedly leading a Johnson County Sheriff’s deputy on a high speed chase and fighting with officers when stopped.
The incident occurred at 9pm Wednesday. The deputy saw 50-year-old Jason Curtin of East 3rd Street operating a 2017 Harley with no tail lights as he was driving on Ireland Avenue in Tiffin. He allegedly continued to eastbound Interstate 80 at a high rate of speed, making reckless lane changes.
Curtin reportedly failed to stop for the deputy’s lights and siren, but was eventually stopped in Coralville. He allegedly began to fight with peace officers immediately, cutting the deputy’s hand and right arm.
The deputy also stated that he was going at 110 miles per hour during the chase, and Curtin was still pulling away from him. At one point, Curtin allegedly turned around and flipped the deputy off.
Curtin has been charged with felony eluding, interference with official acts causing bodily injury, and assault on persons in certain occupations. He was also cited for driving on the wrong side of a two-way highway. If convicted on the criminal counts, Curtin could be sentenced to up to 8 years in prison.
