Marengo was among 60 cities tied for 40th out of 99 Iowa cities with at least one BBB Scam Tracker report in July 2026, recording one scam report, according to Better Business Bureau.
The city had no scam reports listed in the previous month.
The report listed a loss of $69.48 in a counterfeit product scam. The person said they bought shirts advertised as Till Vahala Project items at a deep discount, but the shirts received were counterfeit and of lower quality than genuine ones. The report noted that online searches suggested a refund was unlikely.
BBB Scam Tracker lets consumers search reported scams and share their experiences to help others spot similar schemes. The BBB says it reviews each report before publication and does not publicly display the reporter’s name or personal contact information.
Fraud reports have continued to show large financial losses nationwide. The Federal Trade Commission said consumers reported losing more than $12.5 billion to fraud in 2024, a 25% increase from the previous year.
