An Iowa City man charged in a May 2025 shooting is requesting to represent himself at trial.
Police responded to the 800 block of Cross Park Avenue the evening of May 26th 2025 for a report of a man who had been shot inside his vehicle by a subject who fled the scene on a bike he’d stolen from Apple Court. The suspect was identified as 20-year-old Francois Pierre Parker of Davis Street. The victim was transported to a local hospital and required surgery for a bullet wound to his back. The shooting was captured on security video.
Then a few hours later, officers responded to the 10 block of Gleason Drive for a report of a man who had broken into a residence and was attempting to steal a vehicle. Police formed a perimeter and located Parker hiding behind a nearby residence. Parker was found with a stolen gun and ammunition and was positively identified as the suspect in the Cross Park Avenue incident.
Parker faces charges of Willful Injury Causing Serious Injury, Intimidation With A Dangerous Weapon, Trafficking in Stolen Weapons Used in a Crime, Going Armed With Intent, 2nd Degree Burglary, Assault While Displaying a Dangerous Weapon, Use of a Dangerous Weapon in the Commission of a Crime, Person Ineligible to Carry Dangerous Weapons, Possession of a Controlled Substance – Marijuana, and 5th Degree Theft.
If convicted on all counts, Parker could be sentenced to over 41 years in prison.
Last week, Parker was one of three inmates at the Johnson County Jail charged with participating in a riot after he and two other inmates engaged in a physical altercation with another inmate. His injuries were so severe he had to be transported to a local hospital to be treated.
KCRG TV reports a new trial date for Parker has yet to be set.
