As many Iowans proudly celebrated themselves in the waning days of the Iowa State Fair this weekend and as the U.S. president celebrated himself with his ballroom and triumphal arch and America 250 Grand Prix, about three dozen persistent patriots peacefully protested in downtown Perry Saturday, their 81st consecutive weekly gathering.
The week’s latest facts confirmed long-settled opinions among the activists, with the U.S. national debt now topping $40 trillion amid slowing growth and rising food and gas prices, with President Trump’s misguided and really foolish war against Iran entering its sixth month, with the ongoing brutalities of ICE and the Border Patrol, who abuse and kill immigrants and U.S. citizens alike, with the shameless corruption of the Trump clan and its allied grifters, who have put at least $2.2 billion in their pockets, and with Trump’s latest petty and pointless alienation of our closest allies, such as Canada and South Korea.
The list goes on, said the protesters. “Economically, domestically, geopolitically — Trump is a loser in every performance category that concerns the American people,” said one sign bearer.
“Hillary told us 10 years ago this clown was unfit for office, and she was right,” said another sign-bearing woman, as a third sat under a parasol with a sign reading, “Evil Beyond Belief.”
Even with only 33% of respondents now saying they approve of Trump’s performance in the White House, many Americans remain devoted to the president. Natalie Harp, for example, personal assistant to the president, whose recently published deleted tweets show her unwavering faith in Trump, typifies the MAGA base at its most fervent.
