Hello, church dinner fans!
You have not heard from me with this type of story for nearly 5.5 years because I have been busy working as the administrator of the Vinton Lutheran Home. I stay with my parents in Vinton during the week and come back to Perry for most weekends. They have put up with me for over five years — to say nothing of my first 18!
I am also in my second term of service as the adjutant of the George G. Luckey Post 57 of the Vinton American Legion. In other words, I am the secretary of the organization. I have been a regular attendee of the Benton County American Legion meetings, too, and the Benton County Post 218 Amvets.
Although I still volunteer with Pegasus Cable Channel 12 (now 121.1,) in Perry, I am not able to be as active with it as I would like to be. Working with Pegasus is therapeutic for me. Someday I will retire, and hopefully Pegasus will survive, and I can help to improve it.
With my job, I have recently moved over to the corporate office in Vinton, which has been a lot less stressful. Maybe my hair will turn back to black from being grey! My blood pressure and weight have also benefited from less stress. My 31 years working as a long-term care administrator has sure taken its toll on me. I do not know how people survive being a director of nursing, which is even more stressful.
Now on to a dinner story. On Saturday, July 25, the Linden United Methodist Church hosted its annual Ice Cream Social. The menu included loose-meat beef burgers. They had an upgrade this year. Usually, the beef burgers are served on wax paper. This year they upgraded to aluminum foil. Maybe they got a good deal from Kaiser Aluminum.
They also served homemade ice cream and assorted pies and cakes. I asked one of the people working at the donation table what the money raised would be used for. She stated, “To pay the bills.” You do have a lot of costs with maintaining a church.
Each year it seems like there are ever more people in attendance. What a great event and a prime example of Americana! I hope that in the fall they have their annual Hunter’s Steak Dinner.
