The April meeting of Nu Alpha Gamma was a busy one. Following brunch, the members welcomed Michelle Laughridge and Katie Kayser, recipients of the chapter’s 2025-2026 Literacy Grants. Both educators received $125 from the society.
Laughridge said she purchased high-quality headphones to use in her third-grade special education classroom at the Perry Elementary School. The technology enables her students to use effectively a new online tutoring component recently implemented in the Perry Community School District.
Kayser, a seventh and eighth grade literacy teacher at the Adel-De Soto-Minburn Middle School, told the Nu Alpha Gamma members about the books she purchased to add to her classroom library. The books represent the diverse group of students whom she serves.
“These books helped me create a more holistic library filled with books that relate, challenge and inspire the students that I teach every day,” Kayser said. She said they especially appeal to the boys in her class, who can sometimes be reluctant readers.
Later in the meeting, Membership Chairperson Barb Burket recognized four long-term NAG members with certificates of appreciation. Honored were Marlene Johnson for 45 years, Carol Hill for 20 years and Deb Irving for 10 years. Jackie Landon, who was unable to be present, was honored for 35 years of membership.
The chapter also installed officers for the 2026-2028 biennium. Leading the group for the next two years will be President Cathy Clark, First Vice President Paula Thomson, Second Vice President Barb Burket, Recording Secretary Myrna Griffith, Corresponding Secretary Sharon Ulrich and Treasurer Deb Irving.
