This year the Bedford Community School is introducing a food pantry to their Better Together Program. The food pantry is open on professional development early out days, from 1:30 to 4:00 p.m. and by appointment as needed and is open to all families who have a student enrolled in the district.
Last year Principal Dana Nally and Elementary Guidance Counselor Tabor Strong met and discussed goals for the program. “One thing we kind of realized is that our kids and our families at  Bedford don’t have access to a lot of free food,” said Tabor. They started looking into some grants and what other schools were doing. Dana visited Hopkins to see how theirs worked. Tabor and
Dana have received some grants to start the program as well as donations from the community. They received a grant from Poet to help get started. They also get food from the Food Bank of Iowa. The Food Bank of Iowa delivers food twice a month. There is a refrigerator in Tabor’s room so they can offer cold food items as well as shelf items. They will be getting a standup freezer soon so they will be able to offer frozen meats.
     Tabor

gets the students involved in the Food Pantry by having two leadership groups run it. The Pantry Pals clean and organize the pantry and help advertise and the other leadership group, the Backpack Buddies, help pack the backpacks for the kids for the weekends for the students signed up. “It’s been really eye opening for the students who are helping with the Food Pantry,” said Tabor. “They are realizing that everyone comes from different backgrounds. The students signed up for the leadership groups are students in grades K-5.”
