The last two days have been so fun, as the Webster City Fire Department held its first ever girls only fire camp called “Camp Ignite Her”. This was an idea that one of WCFD Firefighters, Amanda Staley had a few years ago. Firefighter Staley, WCFD’s only female firefighter currently, has been on the department for several years. She has always had a passion to try to encourage young girls to get involved with the fire department.
This year, when she asked if we could try this camp, I said let’s do it. In all, 14 girls signed up, between the ages of 13-18 and it was amazing. The girls were instructed by Amanda, of course, as well as Captains Estlund and Sowle, Lieutenants Zehner and Wills, and Firefighters Feickert, Lehman, and Hanson. We also had a Duncombe Firefighter Joleah Stuhr as an instructor for both days.

And all the girls were taken by fire truck to a couple of locations in town. A stop at City Hall, where they met our City Manager, John Harrenstein, and stops at La Perla Jerocha and Empower where they wanted to thank them for donating lunch and drinks for their camp.
At the end of camp, each girl that completed all the events received a certificate and are now given the chance to become Fire Cadets with WCFD. It was a great experience for all of them and WCFD is thankful for the opportunity to share what we do with them.
