Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds signed Senate File 592 into law a little more than a week ago. It prevents local governments from restricting homeowners from building accessory dwelling units on their property.

These are very small living spaces that can be used as rental property. Supporters see it as a way to create more affordable housing.

Moline in Illinois adopted a local ordinance to allow them, but they aren’t that widespread in the Midwest. They are very popular in California where housing prices are exorbitant.
