One adult has died and a juvenile is missing following an incident Tuesday afternoon at Lake Macbride.
The Iowa City Community School District issued a statement Tuesday night indicating a group of fifth graders from Borlaug Elementary were on a field trip with School of the Wild when the incident occurred. First responders were called to a water emergency on the lake at 12:10 Tuesday afternoon, specifically to an area near the Lake Macbride dam with Coralville Lake. A news release from the Johnson County Sheriff’s office indicates an adult victim was pulled from Coralville Lake at 12:43 p.m. and was pronounced dead at the scene. Crews searched for a missing juvenile for about eight hours, but recovery efforts were suspended in the evening and will resume Wednesday morning.
Counselors and additional support personnel will be available at Borlaug Elementary to support students and staff in the days ahead. School of the Wild field trips have been canceled for the foreseeable future.
The identities of the victim and missing individual are not being released at this time, and the incident remains under investigation.
