Allegedly entering the steam tunnels under the Pentacrest without permission has led to a felony charge against an Iowa City man.
18-year-old Cody Morris of IWV Road faces the rare charge of Trespassing on Public Utilities Property. University of Iowa Police say just before 12: 30 on the morning of July 18th Morris and another subject entered the tunnels located under the buildings on the Pentacrest and gained access to several areas of utility management and control. The area is access-controlled and features numerous signage warning unauthorized personnel to stay out. Arrest records indicate Morris and the other suspect had no right to be in the tunnels and lacked the proper safety equipment required for a confined entry. The property is technically owned by the UI power plant, a state organization . That makes trespassing on its property a felony.
If convicted, Morris faces a maximum of five years in prison.
The name of the other suspect has not yet been released.
