Today marks 25 years since 9/11.
It was September 11, 2001, when a targeted attack against America claimed nearly three thousand innocent lives at the Twin Towers in New York City, the Pentagon in Washington D.C. and an open field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
Governor Kim Reynolds has ordered flags to fly at half-staff from sunrise to sunset today in honor of Patriots Day – and in memory of those who lost their lives in the September 11th terrorist attacks. Among the nearly 3,000 people who died on 9/11 were eight known victims with connections to Iowa:
- James Cleere, Newton
- Karen Ann Kincaid, Waverly
- Mari-Rae Sopper, formerly of Ames
- Michael Tinley, formerly of Council Bluffs
- SPC Craig Scott Amundson, Cedar Rapids
- Lt. Col. Gary F. Smith, Council Bluffs
- Timothy Aaron Haviland, formerly of Ames
- Sandra Dawn Teague, formerly of Des Moines and West Des Moines
Governor Reynolds says “on this solemn anniversary, we remember and honor them, and reaffirm our resolve to stand together against those who threaten our people and our ideals”.
