Emergency preparedness saves lives, reduces panic, helps recovery

Emergencies can happen with little warning, whether it’s a severe storm, power outage, flooding or another unexpected event. While we can’t always predict when a disaster will occur, taking a few simple steps ahead of time can help us protect ourselves and our loved ones.

Preparing for emergencies saves lives, reduces panic and helps us recover from disasters more quickly.

The first step to ensure you’re always ready is to make a household emergency plan. Talk with family members about what to do in different scenarios, including where to shelter in your home, where to meet outside your home and an out-of-town contact everyone can call to report they are safe.

It’s also helpful to put together an emergency supply kit to keep in your home shelter area. Keep enough non-perishable food, water and essential supplies to get each person through three days without access to stores or other services. Essential items include a flashlight, batteries, a first-aid kit with medications, hygiene products and a way to charge your phone. Consider keeping extra kits in your vehicles and workplaces as well.

Finally, stay informed. Make sure you know how to receive local alerts and warnings. One reliable option is Smart911, Iowa’s official emergency notification system. Sign up by texting DALLASIA to 672-83 or downloading the Smart911 app.
