A Tiffin man was taken into custody early Sunday morning after allegedly getting into a fight at a local bar.
The incident occurred at approximately 1:38am Sunday, when officers were dispatched to the Back Berner Bar and Grill on East Marengo Road. 36-year-old Andrew Stephens of 2nd Street was reportedly attempting to leave the parking lot in his truck. He allegedly had bloodshot watery eyes, very slurred speech, poor balance and a heavy odor of ingested alcohol. After field tests showed significant impairment, he reportedly submitted to a PBT showing a breath-alcohol level significantly over the legal limit.
Stephens had blood on his hands an knuckles, and witnesses stated that he had punched another person 4 or 5 times, leaving them unconscious. They were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. A witness showed an officer video of the incident, where Stephens allegedly was screaming at the victim on the ground, yelling “Eff that guy.”
Other witnesses reported Stephens trying to fight multiple people while trying to break up the fight. One person was hit in the chin, causing pain.
When interviewed, Stephens reportedly admitted to losing his cool and, quote, “seeing red.”
He was taken into custody and charged with Disorderly Conduct, two counts of Assault causing Bodily Injury, and first offense OWI. If convicted on all counts, Stephens could be sentenced to over three years in prison.
Judge Mark Neary released Stephens on his own recognizance pending future court dates on Monday.
