IDA GROVE, Iowa (Iowa Media Wire) — Hundreds of people over in Ida Grove, Iowa hiked and biked their way around town Wednesday to raise funds for scholarships for high school students.

The 31st annual Whitey Thompson Hike-Bike-a-thon had 577 kids in attendance and that’s not even counting the adults and teachers that joined in.

The event began at the United Bank of Iowa with people either walked or rode their bikes for roughly two miles around Ida Grove.

With periodic breaks for a fun game and a drink of water. The event is a sort of reward for kids after raising money for OABCIG Dollars for Scholars which provides a scholarship for students going to college.

One student people who took part in the event said they look forward to the event every year.

“Doing it with my friends, I like to walk. I think walking is easier than biking,” said Tonie Boysen, a Hike-Bike-a-thon rider.

This year, a total of more than $300,000 in scholarships will be split between 52 graduating seniors.

In the past 30 years, more than $1.1 million have been donated to students.
