Conservative commentator and media host Ben Shapiro has booked a date at the University of Iowa.
Iowa Media Wire reports the event is part of Turning Point USA’s “America: Love It or Leave It” tour. Turning Point USA is a right-wing political group whose members make appearances on college campuses.
The organization announced the tour late last month. Shapiro will speak October 8th.
Students had mixed reactions to the announcement. Some thought it was an opportunity to people to give their opinions if the environment remains civil, while others said Shapiro’s rhetoric was hateful and had no place on a college campus.
Shapiro’s appearance will come three days after civil rights activist and icon Ruby Bridges is scheduled to speak on campus. In 1960, the then six-year-old became the first black student to integrate into an all-white elementary school in New Orleans. She was escorted by US Marshals on her first day of school while protesters lined the streets.
