With the recent change to longer days, more sunshine and warmer weather, many of us are feeling a mood boost. These moments remind us of just how good it feels to have good mental health — and how important it is to prioritize our mental health all year round.

Mental health refers to our emotional, psychological and social well-being. It influences how we think, feel, act, handle stress, relate to others and make decisions. When we have good mental health, we tend to enjoy our lives a little extra, be more productive and cope with challenges that come our way.

When we neglect our mental health, we may experience low energy, poor sleep and difficulty concentrating. Poor mental health can also affect our physical health, leading to issues, such as anxiety, depression, high blood pressure, heart disease and a weakened immune system.

While mental health can depend on factors outside of our control, the good news is there are many things we can do to improve it on our own. Regular physical activity is one of the best things you can do for both your mind and body. Find something you enjoy — whether that’s walking, dancing, weightlifting or playing a team sport — and try to do it most days.

Maintain a consistent sleep schedule and balanced diet with a focus on fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins, as these habits regulate energy levels and emotions.

It’s also helpful to add stress management into your routine, such as mindfulness, meditation or journaling.

Finally, stay connected with friends, family or community groups for support and to reduce feelings of isolation.

Many people also benefit from professional help. If your mental health feels unmanageable, let your primary care doctor know or talk to a therapist. Check out the Your Life Iowa website to find help near you. If you or a loved one are ever in a mental health emergency, you can always call 988 to speak to a free, confidential counselor.
