The American Red Cross opened a shelter in response to an apartment fire in Des Moines on Monday, May 4, 2026. The shelter is located in the gym of the old Des Moines University campus, 3200 Grand Ave., Des Moines, IA 50312. Trained Red Cross volunteers are staffing the shelter to provide residents with care, comfort and support as they begin the recovery process.
