As communities across the country observe Military Appreciation Month, The Perry News is launching a series of highlight columns in order to recognize current and former Perry-area graduates serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. The inspiration for this series comes from the belief that strong communities are built by individuals who are willing to serve something greater than themselves. Alexis de Tocqueville, the 19th-century French historian and political thinker, observed that what made America unique was the willingness of everyday citizens to step forward in service to their communities and country. Military service reflects the spirit of sacrifice, civic responsibility and commitment to others that continues to shape communities like Perry today. Pfc Nadia Catalina Villa, a 2025 graduate of Perry High School, is currently serving in the U.S. Marine Corps. Reflecting on her experience so far, Villa shared how military service has challenged her to grow both physically and mentally.

“Since joining the Marine Corps, I have grown tremendously both physically and mentally,” said Villa. “Before leaving for boot camp, I lacked the discipline and confidence I carry today. The challenges, hardships and lessons I experienced taught me resilience, accountability and the importance of discipline in every aspect of life.”

Villa said the experience of earning the title of U.S. Marine has given her a stronger sense of confidence, courage and pride while shaping how she carries herself both in uniform and in everyday life.

Stories like Villa’s reflect a longstanding tradition of service that continues to shape Perry. The Perry community proudly recognizes Pfc. Villa and all current and former service members whose dedication and sacrifice continue to make a difference at home and abroad.
