Iowa City’s Downtown District will have a bigger imprint beginning this summer, as it plans to expand its boundaries to double in size.

Effective July 1, the district will expand north to include the University of Iowa Health Care downtown campus and south to add 12 blocks of homes and businesses.

The District is renewing its Self-Supported Municipal Improvement District, or SSMID, designation which allows for the expansion. Businesses in the new district will pay a higher tax, with the money going back into district initiatives.

Joe Reilly is the Downtown District director of operations and nighttime initiatives. He tells KCRG TV9 that the expansion will allow the district to serve new members better.
