SIOUX CITY, Iowa, LAWRENCE, KS (Iowa Media Wire) — One Siouxland barbershop quartet hit all the right notes and brought home a big win earlier this month.
The barbershop quartet group “Spare Parts” won the senior championship title at the Central States District Barbershop Convention in Lawrence, Kansas, on October 10th.
The group, which is part of the Siouxland Discovery Chorus, competed against 38 other quartets from across the Midwest.
The award came as a huge surprise to the performers, as three of them weren’t even present for the awards ceremony.
“You should hear my wife say it, because as she says it, you can’t surprise me very often,” said Spare Parts bass Jerry Forbes. “But that time, as they got to the announcement, I just about fell out of my chair, and so I looked around for the other guys so that we could go upstairs on the stage. They were nowhere to be found.”
The other three did eventually meet up with Forbes to accept their award.
Forbes says singing has helped him live longer and encourages others to join in.
“Come and sing with us, and you’ll find that it makes a big difference in how long you live and how worthwhile it is to be living,” Forbes said.
Those interested in joining the Siouxland Discovery Chorus are encouraged to attend their weekly gatherings, held Monday nights at 7 p.m. at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Morningside.
