SIOUX CITY, Iowa (Iowa Media Wire) — It’s an event that, for four years, has been making drivers on Highway 75 say, “What the heck is that?”

It was Bras Across the Bridge Day on Friday. Hosted by the radio station Q102 to raise awareness for breast cancer in Siouxland, Bras Across the Bridge is a staple around Sioux City.

600 feet of bras were tied together and strung across the Morningside Avenue bridge over Highway 75.

Q102 Program Director and Morning Show Host Moose Cannon said the event is hosted every year to encourage women to get tested for breast cancer — something that Iowans could do better at.

“Iowa has some of the lowest testing rates of women getting their mammograms done and going to see their doctor, and just getting checked out in general,” said Cannon. “And then, on top of that, they also have the highest diagnoses in the country as well. So, put those two together, and it’s not great. So what we’ve been trying to get people to understand is that they’ve got to get tested.”

Cannon said the event is hosted every year to remind Siouxland that early detection is crucial.

“It’s all about getting detection and finding out early. In earlier stages—we’ve heard some great stories today too—the earlier you get it, the easier it is to be treated because it is a treatable disease,” said Cannon.

Following the event, all bras are donated to people in need in Siouxland.
