October is Head Start Awareness Month: Celebrating 60 years of impact

     October is Head Start Awareness Month, a time to honor the legacy and ongoing impact of Head Start programs in communities across the country, including right here in southwest Iowa.
Founded in 1965, Head Start has served over 38 million children and families nationwide, providing comprehensive early childhood education, health, nutrition, and family support services. Locally, MATURA Head Start continues to be a vital resource for families, offering high-quality preschool education and connections to community service that help children thrive and families succeed.
     “Head Start is more than a preschool program: it’s a foundation for lifelong learning and family empowerment,” said Joel Lamb. MATURA Head Start Director, “We see the difference every day in the lives of children who are better prepared for school and families who feel supported and connected.”
Head Start and Early Head Start programs are designed to serve children from birth to age five in low-income households, ensuring they receive the care, education, and developmental support they need during their most critical years. Services include:
-Early learning and school readiness
-Health and developmental screenings
-Nutritious meals and physical activity
-Family engagement and support services
     Studies show children who attend Head Start are more likely to graduate high school, pursue higher education, and enjoy better health outcomes. However, the true impact is seen in the stories of local families: parents who gain confidence and skills, children who discover a love of learning, and communities that grow stronger through connection and care.
MATURA Head Start currently has preschool classrooms in Bedford, Corning, Creston and Winterset serving children three to five years old. Plans for an additional preschool classroom in Lenox are progressing with an anticipated opening in late fall 2025. Early Head Start services for children age birth to three are available to a limited number of children and families in Creston as well.
