IOWA (Iowa Media Wire) — Just as absentee voting in Iowa begins, Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate is warning voters about potential text scams.
Pate said that people are getting texts from numbers impersonating elected officials and candidates in the hopes of scamming Iowans.
Although we are unaware of reports around Siouxland, Pate said that it is happening around many Iowa counties.
The fake message asks recipients about their top priorities, and then asks them to reply with thoughts or “Text STOP to opt out.” Pate said that legitimate outreach from candidates and pollsters will not ask for sensitive information.
