On Friday, Oct. 31, costumes and characters will take over the Quad Cities streets for Halloween. Kids and families will walk up and down each block trick or treating. It’s bound to be a fun time this holiday weekend, but it’s important that everyone stays safe.
Davenport Police Department had words of advice for the public on how to keep everyone safe.
“Slow down in those residential areas where there’s going to be a lot of kids,” said Nicholas Shorten, the DPD traffic safety unit commander. “Kids are going to be excited, so, there’s always that chance that kids could run across the street, and we don’t want anybody to get hurt.”
Shorten also stressed how trick or treaters can stay safe while they roam the streets.
“Always safety in numbers,” he said. “The more people there are, the more likely you’re going to be seen and the safer you’re going to be,” said Shorten. “Stay together. It’s always more fun with more people too.”
Something as simple as making eye contact with a driver who is stopped at a crosswalk before you cross as a pedestrian can help keep everyone safe.
Around the area, trick or treating times vary between cities, although all will be on Friday, Oct. 31, weather permitting. For households that are taking part, Shorten suggests leaving your porch light on to let everyone know you are handing out treats.
