An Empowering Abilities employee is the first recipient of the organization’s Debra Lindbom Memorial Scholarship.
According to a release from Empowering Abilities, Dawn Wilcox, a 25-year team member, was awarded the scholarship, created in memory of long-time participant Debra “Deb” Lindbom to honor Lindbom’s legacy by supporting Empowering Abilities staff in their professional development. The scholarship provides financial assistance and includes a service commitment to ensure the investment directly benefits the individuals and families served by Empowering Abilities.
“The participants became my second family,” Wilcox said. “Even on the hardest days, just five minutes here could lift your spirits with laughter and joy. I’ll be here until I retire, and retirement doesn’t mean stepping away—I’ll still be donating, volunteering, and staying connected. Empowering Abilities is family, and I’m grateful to be part of it.”
Dawn Wilcox began her journey with Empowering Abilities in September 2001, initially taking a short-term aide position. Over the years, Dawn has built lasting relationships with participants, celebrating milestones and offering unwavering support through both joyful and challenging times. Her dedication has helped shape a culture of compassion and connection at Empowering Abilities. Through the Debra Lindbom Memorial Scholarship, Dawn will further enhance her skills to continue delivering exceptional, person-centered care.
