The Clinton County Sheriff’s Office warns residents that a new scam involving jury duty is in the area after they received reports of scam calls.
The scam involves callers pretending to be Clinton County deputies who use the names of actual Sheriff’s Office employees. The callers threaten victims with arrest for allegedly failing to appear for jury duty. They demand payment of fake fines for missing jury duty in the form of Apple gift cards.
The Clinton County Sheriff’s Office reminds residents that it does not collect or solicit fine payments by phone. All legitimate fines are paid directly to the Clinton County Clerk of Court. No law enforcement agency will ever request payment via gift cards, prepaid debit cards or electronic transfers. Residents are urged to hang up immediately if they receive one of these calls and not provide any personal or financial information.
