MERRILL, Iowa (Iowa Media Wire) — Melbourne Methodist church outside of Hinton was first constructed in the 1800’s, with new editions added in 1960, and newer renovations taking place in 2017.
Peggy Smith, a member of the church, shares a little piece of their history.
“Melbourne United Methodist Church has been around since 1860. So, we’re celebrating our 165th anniversary and the town of Melbourne was just a little way from here. And that was the first county seat in Plymouth County. And so, the church was, was erected there because that’s where there were a lot of people with the early settlers,” said Smith.
Local members and community members filled the church this morning during the morning service as they congregated for the celebration. Pastor Beth Odor says that the celebrations will include all sorts of fun activities for everyone.
“<"Yes, 165 years. And so, we get to celebrate with fellowship together with food and with a wonderful concert and other proceeds go to help Melbourne and all the things that they do so that they can be active in the community as well," said Pastor Odor.
They celebrate the anniversary every 5 years. Although still today, members can enjoy services in the church every Sunday at 9 a.m.
