CORYDON, Iowa – The Mount Ayr cross-country teams started their season last week at the Wayne Falcon Invitational. There, the Raiderette girls placed fourth and the Mount Ayr boys did not have enough runners to score as a team.
On the girl’s side, Mount Ayr had five runners at the meet and placed fourth with 93 points. Addison Doolittle captured a top-10 finish, placing eighth in 21:40. Three others nabbed top-30 finishes. Ryley Greenwell placed 23rd in 24:26, Ava England placed 27th in 24:58 and Kacie Larson placed 28th in 25:12. Also at the meet was Irais Trujillo who placed 49th.
Class 1A No. 2 Martensdale-St. Marys won the meet with a team score of 21 points. Knoxville was the second place team in the standings with 59 points. Wayne placed third with 62 points and Mount Ayr was fourth with 93 points.
On the boy’s side, Braylon Greenwell led three Raider runners with a 20th place finish in the boys race. Greenwell ran a time of 19:27. Two other Raiders also competed at the meet. Austin Briner placed 60th in 23:36 and Kellon Shaffer placed 79th in 25:44.
Chariton won the meet with a team score of 29 points. The Chargers are the top ranked team in Class 2A and won the meet by 20 points over runner-up Knoxville who scored 49 points. Clarke placed third with 105 points. Three other Pride of Iowa Conference teams scored in the team race. Central Decatur placed fourth, Wayne placed fifth, Martensdale-St. Marys sixth, and SE Warren eighth. East Union and Lenox also had runners at the meet, but did not have enough to score as a team.
Mount Ayr will run at a big meet in Leon. Central Decatur will host a large meet on Tuesday, September 9 when 15 teams will vie for the title at the Central Decatur Invitational at the Leon Golf and Country Club. Teams coming to town along with Mount Ayr and Central Decatur are Mormon Trail, Moravia, Wayne, SE Warren, Melcher-Dallas, Diagonal, Clarke, Pleasantville, Centerville, Chariton, East Union, Twin Cedars, and Lamoni.
