POWESHIEK COUNTY, Iowa (WHO) — Two people were killed and four people were injured during a crash in Poweshiek County Saturday afternoon.
Just after 5:30 p.m. on Saturday the Poweshiek County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 called reporting an accident at the intersection of Highway 63 and Ewart Road, north of Montezuma. Deputies arrived on scene and located two vehicles which has been involved in the crash.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, the preliminary investigation indicates a Jeep Wrangler driven by 18-year-old Andrew Buttler of Freeport, Florida, was traveling eastbound on Ewart Road when it failed to yield at a stop sign and collided with a Jeep Renegade that was northbound on Highway 63. The driver of the Renegade was identified as 51-year-old George Wegner of Judsonia, Arkansas. Both vehicles came to rest in a cornfield.
The Iowa State Patrol says two rear-seat passengers of the Jeep Wrangler were pronounced dead on the scene. According to the ISP, neither had been wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. They have been identified as Sydney Andersen of Grinnell, Iowa, and Aaliyah Martin of Carlsbad, New Mexico. Both were 18 years old.
The drivers of both vehicles, along with two other passengers, suffered injuries in the crash and were transported via ambulance and medical helicopters to various area hospitals.
The Poweshiek County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Iowa State Patrol, Montezuma Fire and Ambulance, Malcom Fire Department, East Poweshiek Ambulance Service, Iowa DOT, Poweshiek County EM and the Grinnell Fire Department.
