The annual Prairie Awakening/Prairie Awoke event is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 6 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Kuehn Conservation Area in rural Earlham.
Sponsored by the Dallas County Conservation Board, the celebration offers Indigenous songs, dances, games, food and stories.
Dallas Chief Eagle, master hoop dancer, will return this year with his eldest daughter, Jasmine, and her family, who are all champion hoop dancers and storytellers. Their interactive and entertaining presentation teaches about healthy life choices, mental resilience and our connection to nature.
Visitors will enjoy live Native flute music, games and demonstrations in the morning and dancing and music in the afternoon, with the release of tagged monarchs and a rehabilitated raptor among the highlights of the celebration.
Visitors may bring lawn chairs or blankets and umbrellas for shade. Traditional Native foods will be available for purchase at a Meskwaki food truck. This is a pet-free and alcohol-free event. Register to be notified of cancellation or any changes.
