Hawkeyes' Kirk Ferentz talks QBs as 'productive' fall camp closes

Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz met the media Thursday as the Hawkeyes brought fall camp to a close.

“Things have picked up here about the last seven days with people moving into campus, so a little bit more busy around here,” Ferentz said. “Football-wise, just, you know, pleased overall with the camp. I think it was a really good preseason… productive. We’re really pretty healthy right now. I don’t anticipate anything at this point, you know, affecting us in preparation for the first game. Basically, last night was our last full night of full camp mode, if you will.”

The quarterback position is always a topic of interest, and Ferentz name-dropped a few.

“[Mark Gronowski] wasn’t out there in the spring as we all know, so that, that put him behind a little bit, but I think he’s gaining more comfort — and he’s already a pretty confident guy — but he’s gaining more comfort, and I could say the same thing about Hank [Brown],” Ferentz said. “He’s done a really good job, too, and the fact that he was here in the spring, I think that shows. … He’s a little smoother with everything, but both of those guys have really, I think, done a good job. Jeremy [Hecklinski] is a little bit behind — it’s a little bit of a gap there, but seeing a lot of good things with him, and so the whole group is really doing better than maybe we would have anticipated and once we start playing games, hopefully we’ll see that accelerate even more.”
