The City of Tiffin is asking residents to participate in a special census.
The area has seen a population boom, with a doubling of the population between 2010 and 2020. Based on the city’s Utilities Department count of how many households have water meters, the city believes their population has nearly doubled again, to around 7000 residents.
The special census can result in a significant increase in federal and state dollars for roads and other city improvements.
Residents can participate online beginning in September. They will get postcards with a link to the site. Those that don’t use the online option will be contacted in person. Tiffin has posted job openings for four census workers to knock on doors on their website.
The city is using $370,000 from its general fund to cover the cost of the special census, which they say will be recouped with the additional funding.
The City of North Liberty held a special census in 2015 due to a population boom. It resulted in about $1.4 million in additional revenue for the city over the ensuing five years.
