SIOUX CITY, Iowa (Iowa Media Wire) — The second day of interviews of the finalists for the vacant Sioux City City Manager’s job concluded on Friday.

The interviewee of the day was Craig Clark, who is the city administrator of Austin, Minnesota, a city of about 26,000 people. He’s been in that position for 10 and a half years.

Clark is also the executive director for the Austin Port Authority. His resume includes serving as a state representative in the Minnesota legislature, along with working for a couple of congressmen.

Clark spoke to the council about what his focus would be and specific objectives he would like to accomplish in the first 90 days if he’s hired for the job.

“Now, do I spend every day out in the departments? Probably not. But, at the same token, trying to get some sense of what’s going on in the front lines for the city. And just really, spending even 90 days to assume I could do that for a community the size of Sioux City would be impossible. But, really, immersing myself into the community is really what I would spend my time trying to do,” Clark said.

The other candidate interviewed was Andrew Barden. He’s the city administrator for the city of Winterset, Iowa.

Barden said the Winterset job is the first city administrator job, and he has been in that role for four and a half years. He was a part-time resident in Sioux City for five years while a member of the 113th Cavalry Regiment.

Barden said he was in the Iowa Army National Guard for 20 years.

Barden told the council members what his focus would be in his first 3 months and the specific objectives he wants done.

“So, my goal would be in the first 90 days to observe operations and procedures, and processes. And truly understand what individual employees’ concerns are, but starting with internal. Then I would move to the outside, as I like to say, which would be not only department heads, but support staff there. And then moving to community stakeholders, such as the  newspapers and the media,” Barden said.

Council members interviewed Eric Swanson on Thursday. He’s the interim city manager for the city of Phoenix, Oregon.

The council will go over their notes from all the interviews. The person they will choose will be announced at a later date.
