SIOUX CITY, Iowa (Iowa Media Wire) — A new nuclear energy and nuclear waste storage center ordinance passed a second reading at Tuesday’s Woodbury County Supervisors meeting.
The discussion over nuclear energy began several weeks ago. If approved after a third reading on August 5, the ordinance would define a nuclear “energy facility” and “waste storage” and also lay out how a conditional use permit process would apply.
Another large crowd attended the meeting, with several addressing the supervisors on the issue.
“So, I just find this out of character to be discussing this, wasting people’s time when there is no applicant,” said concerned citizen Joann Sadler.
“This is not a stamp of approval that this is the way we’re going and/or that someone’s applied right now that we are saying yes to. We are just creating an ordinance that gives us a framework to say yes or no,” Dan Bittinger, Chairman of the Woodbury County Board of Supervisors, said.
