SIOUX CITY, Iowa (Iowa Media Wire) — While the competition is hot on the field at the state baseball tournament, it’s also hot in the stands as fans battle suffocating heat and humidity.
With a heat index that was supposed to get up to 105 degrees, fans are doing anything to keep cool.
“Lots and lots of water and ice drinks and soda and everything we can hopefully keep hydrated with everything,” said Courtney Gilroy from Cedar Rapids, IA.
“Lots of sunscreen and lots of water,” added Amy McClintock from Essex, IA.
“Got our sunscreen, got our liquids to drink, and just want to watch some good ball,” said Julie Buckallew from Johnson, IA.
It’s not just the fans trying to keep cool. Schools have to make sure the players on the field are ready to play and are safe in the July heat.
“Well, we made sure with our parent group that we probably sent them with 32 cases of water, Gatorade, tons of snacks. Made sure they had every hydration tool necessary to be here today,” said Heather Semelmacher, Activities & Athletic Director at Johnson High School.
If fans do get overtaken with the heat, there is help at the stadium.
CNOS is set up in front of the stadium to lend a hand.
“Thank goodness we have not had to help a lot of people because of the heat, but we have had some instances of people in the dugout or a few fans who have needed our hospitality here. So, thank goodness we were able to provide them with ice packs, hydration, and snacks to keep them healthy out there while they’re watching the games,” said Sarah Rol, Communications Director at CNOS.

According to CNOS, the best way to avoid any problems with the heat is to prepare accordingly before coming to the park.
“Hydration is the key. You need to get ahead of it. Once you’re dehydrated, it’s tough to get ahead. Hydrate the night before the game,” added Rol. “The morning before you come out and watch it’s really important. If you feel lightheaded, shade and the breeze are good. Splashing your face with cold water. Getting some ice. All those things are available and ready for fans at the stadium.”
The heat is supposed to continue Wednesday before dropping into the 80s the rest of the week.
The state baseball tournament concludes on Friday at Lewis and Clark Park.
