The Charles City Arts Center opened up its newest featured exhibit on Friday, July 4.

In the midst of the rest of the day’s 4th of July activities, the Charles City Arts Center hosted a reception to celebrate the opening of its latest featured exhibit, “A Sense of Place,” by Julie Hughes.

“I’m happy to see people come take a look,” said Hughes, who was present on Friday evening to discuss her work with visitors.

An Iowa native who serves as the TAG coordinator in Grundy Center, Hughes spends her spare time creating mixed media artwork, utilizing layers of paints and pencils to make abstract landscapes.

Hughes’ featured exhibit, “A Sense of Place,” is a collection of her recent works, inspired by Iowa’s landscapes.

“When I was younger growing up on the farm, I didn’t really pay attention,” said Hughes. “Now that I’m an adult, there is so much to appreciate.”

This is the second time Hughes has been a featured artist at the Arts Center and some of her pieces have already been marked for sale by the community’s art lovers.

“I’m very appreciative of this space,” said Hughes. “It’s fun to be back. The Charles City community is very supportive of the arts.”

Hughes’ exhibit will be up at the Arts Center from now until August 16.
