We know Caitlin Clark is a “truly generational” talent, but no one is paying $41,407 to see her Fever play the Brazilian National Team in a WNBA exhibition at Carver-Hawkeye Arena this May. Right?
But you could buy one right now for that on the secondary market. It’s the top price for a ticket on the “Official Fan-to-Fan Ticket Marketplace” of the Iowa Hawkeyes, StubHub, to the May 4 game at Clark’s former home court.
And while that might be extreme, StubHub had 70 listings just before 2 p.m. starting at $474 up to that $41,407 high point, and Seat Geek had 31 listings from $482 to $1,562. Their “hottest” section was going for $797. All for tickets priced between $60 and $200 that sold out in 30 minutes Thursday to Kinnick Society Gold and Kinnick Society I-Club level donors and season ticket holders.
Today is the day that tickets were supposed to go on sale to the general public. Key phrase: “Subject to availability.”
Well, today they are very available to the general public, at a significant markup:
A limit of four tickets was put in place, but this was an exclusive presale for Kinnick Society Gold and Kinnick Society I-Club level donors and season ticket holders. The Hawkeyes likely know exactly who is buying — and now selling — these tickets.
So we asked the University of Iowa if there are any repercussions for those who resell their tickets, as we recently saw with the Detroit Lions revoking season tickets for repeat resellers.
The answer: Not necessarily, but it’s possible.
According to the ticket office, purchase and resale of tickets by ticket brokers is prohibited and “suspected ticket brokers or account holders who have a resale history consistent with that of a ticket broker are subject to cancellation.”
Here is the full statement the Iowa ticket office sent us, referencing wording on their website:
The University of Iowa Athletics Department prohibits the purchase and resale of tickets by ticket brokers. Ticket brokers are defined as account holders who purchase tickets with the primary intent of reselling their tickets. Orders placed by suspected tickets brokers or account holders who have a resale history consistent with that of a ticket broker, are subject to cancellation. The University of Iowa Ticket Office reserves the right to withhold electronic delivery of tickets purchased by a suspected broker and/or restrict the account holder’s ability to transfer tickets electronically to others.
The University of Iowa Ticket Office reserves the right to monitor ticket account activity and withhold season ticket renewal invitations from accounts that exhibit activity consistent with that of a ticket broker.
The University of Iowa Ticket Office reserves the right to withhold or alter I-Club membership level benefits for any account that it deems a broker account. These benefits include but are not limited to the following:
- Season Ticket Holder relocation appointment times
- Advance single game purchases
- Option to purchase season parking for home games
- Away game ticket purchases including limits and seat location
- Post-Season game purchases including limits and seat location
- Neutral site game purchases including limits and seat location
Furthermore, faculty and staff are not allowed to sell any discounted tickets on the secondary market.
