Former Republican Vice President Dick Cheney announced on Friday he will support liberal Democrat Kamala Harris for President in 2024. Cheney said that President Donald J. Trump “can never be trusted with power again.”
“In our nation’s 248-year history, there has never been an individual who is a greater threat to our republic than Donald Trump,” Cheney said in a statement. “He tried to steal the last election using lies and violence to keep himself in power after the voters had rejected him. He can never be trusted with power again.”
Cheney said Americans have a “duty” to put country above partisanship and defend the Constitution.
“That is why I will be casting my vote for Vice President Kamala Harris,” he said.
Dick Cheney’s statement follows his daughter’s endorsement of Harris. Former Congresswoman Liz Cheney announced last week she too would be backing Harris.
Trump responded on Truth Social that Dick Cheney “is an irrelevant RINO, along with his daughter.”
While some Republicans on the national stage endorse Harris, those endorsements have garnered much criticism from the Republican Party of Iowa.
But the Republican Party of Iowa was quick to criticize Kevin Virgil’s endorsement of Democrat Ryan Melton in his bid against Congressperson Randy Feenstra in Iowa’s Fourth District.
Kaufmann expressed concern on Twitter that Virgil’s endorsement favors “a socialist, anti-Trump candidate and helps Kamala Harris.”
That despite Virgil not endorsing Harris directly, like Liz and Dick Cheney have done.
Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds called Virgil a “sore loser.”
She also hasn’t posted anything about Dick or Liz Cheney’s endorsement.
Congresswoman Ashley Hinson said Virgil “made it clear that he puts politics over what’s best for the country and for Iowa” by endorsing Melton.
Hinson hasn’t responded to Dick or Liz Cheney’s endorsement.
Liberal Republican Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks said that Virigl’s endorsement “is rich.” She said that Virgil may want Harris’ “radical agenda,” but real Republicans don’t.
Miller-Meeks has not responded to Dick or Liz Cheney’s endorsement.
Senator Joni Ernst called Virgil a “NY liberal” who endorsed Feenstra’s “pro-Bernie Sanders opponent.”
Ernst has not responded to Dick or Liz Cheney’s endorsement.
