A suspect accused of fatally shooting another man outside an Iowa City nightclub has reached a plea deal.
Online court records show 21-year-old Antonio Scotton of Cedar Rapids reached the deal with prosecutors on Friday. Details and a sentencing date have not been released.
The shooting took place outside the former H Bar on South Van Buren Street on October 23rd of 2022. Iowa City Police say several physical fights broke out just before 2am, one of which involved 25-year-old Tramon Robinson of Coralville. During the scuffle, a firearm in Robinson’s possession fell to the ground.  Scotton reportedly picked up the handgun and fired several rounds. 36-year-old Waymond Thomas, who was struck by the gunfire, died from his injuries.
Scotton was charged with Voluntary Manslaughter, Intimidation with a Dangerous Weapon, and Participating in a Riot. If convicted on all charges, he could have been sentenced to up to 25 years in prison.
Robinson has two felony convictions, and as such was ineligible to possess a handgun. He’s charged with Dominion or Control of a Firearm as a Felon, a Class D Felony punishable by a prison term of up to five years, if convicted. A case management conference is set for July 29th.
