A suspect in a 2023 forgery case and a 2018 domestic abuse case is now in custody.
38-year-old Antonio McLaurin of Chicago was booked into the Johnson County Jail just before 2:45 Friday morning. McLaurin is accused of depositing a fraudulent $14,22.39 check into a victim’s account using an ATM at Green State Credit Union on Mormon Trek Boulevard on July 5th of last year. Video footage reportedly shows him withdrawing money from the same account at ATMs in Cedar Rapids a short time later.
McLaurin was also wanted for an alleged domestic abuse incident in October of 2018. Iowa City Police say McLaurin physically assaulted his pregnant girlfriend at their Triple Crown Lane apartment in front of the woman’s five-year-old child, including destroying a cellphone when the child was attempting to call 9-1-1.
Coralville Police say McLaurin drove away from a traffic stop on eastbound Interstate 80 near Dodge Street in October of 2018 when he was pulled over for erratic driving. Arrest records indicate McLaurin gave a fake name and date of birth to the officer before speeding away.
McLaurin is charged with Forgery, Domestic Abuse Assault Causing Injury, Domestic Abuse Assault – 3rd or Subsequent Offense, Child Endangerment, False Imprisonment, Obstruction of Emergency Communications, Eluding, Interference With Official Acts, Providing False Information, Careless Driving, Failure to Provide Proof of Financial Liability and Driving Without a License. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum of over 19 years in prison.
