The Merton V. Hair Post of the American Legion, which includes members from Early and Nemaha, recently donated funds to purchase two ballistic shields for the Sac County Sheriff’s Department.

The cost of the shields was nearly seven thousand dollars. Sac County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Jeff Trailer attended the Merton V. Hair Post’s regular monthly meeting on July 1st to show the shields to members. The shields are made of ballistic material which includes a powerful light, as well as glass breakers. Deputy Trailer noted that certified officers receive training with this type of shield during their time at the Law Enforcement Academy.

The purchase of the ballistic shields comes after the Post reached out to the Ridge View Middle School in Early and paid past due lunch balances for students attending the facility. The contribution made in December of 2023 fills the gap for families struggling to meet this expense and reflects the Post’s interest in youth success.
