ALTOONA, Iowa (WHO) – Smithfield Foods announced Monday it is closing its Altoona ham boning facility.
The company said it would improve efficiency by consolidating production at other locations. Smithfield said it plans to meet with the 314 employees affected by the closure to provide transition assistance, including severance and information about possible jobs at other Smithfield locations.
The production that is currently done in Altoona will be spread out between facilities in Monmouth, Illinois; Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and Crete, Nebraska.
The company did not release information about when the Altoona facility would shut down.
