DES MOINES, Iowa (WHO) — The Iowa State Patrol has released the names of two people who died after their SUV went off I-80 early Saturday morning and landed upside down in a creek in Des Moines.
It happened near the 134 mile marker of eastbound I-80, just west of 2nd Avenue, around 7:20 a.m., according to an ISP crash report. William Engel, 65, was driving a Honda CR-V when the SUV went off the road to the right and struck a guardrail and a pole, then fell down the embankment into a creek and landed upside down in the water.
The report said Rose Engel, 58, was pronounced dead at the scene. William Engel was transported to a hospital but later died. Both were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
The Engels were from Cookville, Texas.
The Iowa State Patrol is continuing to investigate the crash.
