WATERLOO, Iowa — The Iowa Department of Public Safety is releasing more information into a shooting that left one man dead and two Waterloo police officers injured.
Kelvin Lee Plain Jr., 35, has been identified as the man who died in the shooting Sunday morning in Waterloo. The DPS said Waterloo police were dispatched to the 200 block of Manson Street around 8:22 on a report of a male with a gun wearing all green clothing and riding a bicycle.
/>When officers arrived in the area they found Plain nearby in Sullivan Park. He was riding a bike and matched the description of the subject in the report. The DPS said Plain fled on the bike and then on foot through the park. Officers fired a taser at Plain as he ran, knocking him to the ground.
The DPS said that’s when Plain fired a handgun at both of the officers. One was struck while still inside his vehicle, and the other was struck while on foot. Both of the officers returned fire, hitting Plain, who died.
Video of the incident was captured by a dash camera on an officer’s vehicle, the DPS said.
The officers were hospitalized with injuries from the shooting but are stable. One is expected to be released on Monday.
The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is continuing its investigation into the incident.
