SIOUX CITY, Iowa (Iowa Media Wire) — Drivers heading west on Gordon Drive no longer need to take a detour for the viaduct.
Traffic in both directions over the Gordon Drive viaduct has been restored Tuesday, the Iowa DOT District 3 office announced. Traffic east and west is restricted to one lane each using the eastbound lanes now.
A weight restriction remains in place for the viaduct.
Iowa 511 states that the entrance from from northbound Lewis Boulevard to westbound Gordon Drive remains closed. The website also notes that construction on the viaduct is in progress until November 15.
The Iowa DOT asks drivers to continue to drive with caution, obey the speed limit and other signals, and to allow space between vehicles.
Since May 21, drivers intending to go west over the viaduct had to take a detour using Fairmount Street and 6th Avenue since the westbound lanes closed. Officials said that during maintenance, officials determined that the lanes would need to be closed for repairs as a precaution. At the time of the closure, Jessica Felix with the Iowa DOT said that “deterioration was more than we anticipated.”
Since the westbound Gordon Drive viaduct lane was closed, Sioux City residents have had to take alternative routes, which has led to many drivers being stopped by trains.
An official told Iowa Media Wire 9 earlier in June that westbound drivers would be able to use the Gordon Drive viaduct soon.
