SIOUX CITY, Iowa (Iowa Media Wire) — An official dedication and ribbon cutting took place Friday for Cone Park’s new $3 million mountain biking complex.

The park includes 10 and a half miles of natural trails with a pump track, skills areas and jump line. Bike rentals also will be available.

Funding for the park started with a $1 million gift from the Chesterman Family Foundation.

“This really has everything that you can imagine to create an environment that gets beginners into the sports, progresses them to certain different levels, intermediate to advanced to more advanced,” Vice President of Sales Jay Chesterman said.

City officials say that about 15 to 20 acres of land were used in the project. Parks and Recreation Director Mat Salvatore said the mountain bike trail system is one of several quality of life initiatives in Sioux City.

“This might be one of the cooler things we have ever done,” Salvatore said. “You know, the start of Cone Park was just a tubing hill, and now it’s year-round. We got something in the summer and in the winter. Stuff that we can be really proud of, and now it’s a true destination year-round.”

On Saturday, there will be the Cone Park Trail Fest for everyone to enjoy for free, with food trucks, live music and pro riders showing off skills. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The mountain bike complex will fully open for the season Sunday.
